APHTRO : Asia Pacific Railway Heritage Conference 2012 in Indonesia


The first conference of APHTRO (Asia Pacific Heritage and Tourist Rail Organisation) will be held in Indonesia.
Everyone with an interest in heritage railways and museums will be warmly welcomed.
This will be a good opportunity to enjoy the magnificent heritage railways of Indonesia and to learn about the heritage railways of Asia.




· Venue & Schedule

The venue of the conference is Solo (also called Surakarta), an old historical city in central Java island.

Schedule of the conference prgramme is;
7 June - Arrival, registlation and welcome dinner.
8 June - Ambarawa railway museum & steam train.
9 June - Jaladara Steam train in Solo city and Tasikmadu sugar mill steam train.
10 June - Conference session with presentations by our founding members and a few guest speakers from WATTRAIN and FEDECRAIL.
11 June - APHTRO working group assembly in the morning.

Visit to Tasikmadu may be maved on 10 June by weather condition.

The conference package includes most of steam rides, road transport, lunches & dinners.

Hotel Ibis Solo★ ★ ★

We will handle the bookings for Roemahkoe Heritage Hotel where is the place of sessions.
Road transport will be provided between two hotels and airport or station.


· Access to Solo

AirAsia operates daily flight between Solo and Kuala Lumpur.
AirAsia also flies to many destinations in Oceania and Asia region.

SilkAir flies three time a week between Solo and Singapore.

Indonesian Railways (PT. Kereta Api) runs train from Jakarta Gambir station.
We will arrange the reservation of following train.
ARGO DWIPANGGA 10, Jakarta Gambir 8:00 -> Solo Balapan 16:16
Fare of Executive coach is IDR 270,000. The train has a dining coach.
Ticket back to Jakarta can be purchased at Jakarta Gambir station or Solo Balapan station.

Another four airlines operate frequently domestic flights between Solo and Jakarta.


· Arrival information

Delegates from most of countries can get arrival Visa at airport, except from some Visa free countries in Southeast Asia.
Check this page or ask your local Indonesian embassy.
Arrival Visa costs USD 25 for 30 days. Some websites say you can pay in major currencies, but it seems better paid in US dollar cash.

Followings are required at passport control;
- passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry, with at least two blank pages
- return airticket
Make sure you recieve stamped departure card and DON'T LOSE IT until your departure.

You can easily find ATM and withdraw Indonesian Rupiah at airport.
There are frequent bus services from Jakarta airport to Gambir station. The cost is IDR 20,000.
If you want to take a taxi to your hotel, grab Silverbird Taxi or Bluebird Taxi. The cost is around IDR 150,000.
Ignore any offered taxi.

Following hotels are relatively close to Gambir station for those who stay in Jakarta before taking train to Solo.

The climate of Indonesia is warm but it is advised brnging long sleeve clothes to cope with too airconditioned train and bus.
